A CHERISHED PRINCESS!

Barbour puppy, Allie May, was adopted in September, 2005 by Lorraine and Bob Meyer from Waterloo, NY.  They adopted her from Jennifer Jayne who volunteers with Brightstar Rescue in Rochester, NY.  Lorraine named Allie after her mother, whose nickname was Allie.  Lorraine has written several times to let everyone know how her little bundle of joy was getting along.  Below are some excerpts from her e-mails . . .

"Allie has adapted very well to us and our home.  Of course, she is spoiled, but that's okay.  The picture of her with the purple bow in her hair was taken just after her first grooming in October.  She looked so beautiful!

Her favorite toy is a pink squeaky bone pillow -- she loves to squeak it and if we throw it, she will go fetch and bring it back.  She has also learned to sit and "shake" for a treat!  What a doll she is.  Allie is the first puppy my husband has ever had and he's 56 years old.  She has been the most loving and precious little puppy -- just like a baby.

Allie's a life-saver, too.  Around Halloween my husband fell asleep on the couch.  I was in the other room when I heard Allie barking -- really going at it!  Then I started smelling smoke and ran down the hall to the living room.  The lighted candle that I had burning in a pumpkin had caught the top of the pumpkin on fire and Allie let us know that something terrible was wrong.  She's not only cute -- she's smart, too!

I just got her a new coat and she loves it.  It has been such a pleasure having a little puppy around and even as she grows she will always be loved and be included in our daily lives and vacations."

Lorraine and Bob Meyer

Lorraine we thank you for all the updates and photos of your little Allie!  The one of her with Santa is just adorable!

LOOK AT ME NOW!

We received these photos and news about baby Pezi (now named Hudson) from Kelly Ann Brown . . .

"I adopted Pezi from Brooke's litter.  We decided to name him Hudson because he was exploring everything when he got hme.  We adopted him when he was 8 1/2 weeks old.  He was such a fluff ball!!  We just celebrated his first birthday along with his 6-year old adopted sister, Holly, with peanut butter flavored Frosty Paws.  Hudson is a registered Canine Good Citizen and is testing for Therapy Dogs International very soon!!  I am writing to thank all of the volunteers at the Barbour County shelter because without your caring for Brooke and protecting her unborn pups, Hudson wouldn't be here to help all of the people he visits and I wouldn't have my sweet boy!!  Thank you soooo much for all of your time and effort!"

Kelly Ann Brown and Hudson

Kelly Ann -- we're so proud of Hudson and grateful to you for adopting him and recognizing his natural talent to be a therapy dog.  Maybe you'll send us some photos of Hudson at "work"???

A HOME FOR CHRISTMAS!

The Wagner family of Fallston, MD adopted Harley (now named Ada) on December 13th and we already have these great photos and update to share with you.

"Ada was timid at first, especially with Dave, but very quickly warmed up to him and got comfortable with the whole family.  Ada travelled well the 6 hours to her new home and has adjusted remarkably fast to living the life of an indoor pup.  She is a joy and we feel very blessed to have her.

Ada lets us know she is still a pup by chewing up her beds, so we've needed to resort to braided rugs for her bed for the time being.  She also tries so hard to get our older beagle, named Beaglie, to play.  Beaglie hadn't played with any dogs for so long that we were sure she would not be successful, but Ada proved us wrong!  She has won Beaglie over and enticed him to play in ways we haven't seen in years.  It's so wonderful.  She also now has a very important job in the family -- she waits every morning at the top of the stairs for me to  tell her it's ok to  go wake  the  girls up.  Then she pounces on each of their beds in turn, waking  them  up  with puppy  kisses and  puppy  play. Amanda, Alexandra and Gwen love their new found puppy friend.

The best part of all for our family is the way she and our cat, Gumdrop get along.  We had tried to adopt a different dog before that failed because it attacked our beloved family pet.  We all were a bit anxious until they met the first time.  But Ada is such a perfect lady, leaving the cat alone with no more than a curious sniff from time to time.

The pictures are of the family and of Ada, to show just how perfectly she fits into our house and our hearts."

What better Christmas could a family and a happy dog ask for?????

WHO'S THE 'BOSS'?

Boss, now named Neko was adopted by Daniel and Brandi Egburtson of Dresden, NY.  Jennifer Jayne was the rescue volunteer who arranged for Boss' adoption.  Jennifer received this e-mail from the Egburtsons and sent it along to us . . .

Well, his name is no longer "Boss", it is now "Neko".  He is doing GREAT, we love him so much already.  You can tell he is still a puppy as he has all of that "puppy" energy.  He likes his chew toy that we bought him.  I actually think we have to get him a new one already.  He plays fetch, and has learned his new name already. He is kennelled at night for now, as he has had a couple of potty accidents.  He does not like the cold weather.  I think that was a contributing factor to his 'accidents'.  He seems to like his baths -- at first he wasn't sure of them until he knew he was going to get scrubbed all over.  At that point he just took all he could get.  He loves to snuggle.  He fits in our family perfectly and we are grateful to have him.

Thank you for rescuing him!

Daniel and Brandi

And we thank Daniel and Brandi for adopting Neko and giving him a safe, loving, 'forever' home.

A 'SPANKING' GOOD DOG!

Debbie's e-mail says it all . . .

"I'm a volunteer for Animal Service League here in Rochester, New York.  Our President, Helga Post, persuaded me  to  foster  dogs from  your organization. Well -- I have just fostered my 13th dog from your wonderful organization before the New Year.  One of them was a funny looking little mix named Spank.  I usually prefer the tall, big dog look, and this guy definitely broke that rule.  After only one day of fostering him, I called Helga and told her he would not be up for adoption; his unique sense of humor stole my heart and make me laugh.  This was quite an effort for him due to the fact I was devastated over the recent loss of my beloved dog, Sniff, to a heart tumor.  Spank is the most amazing dog, akin to a comedian -- great manners and my best buddy.

Another dog I fostered was named Bess, who also never made it to adoption.  I had written to you earlier as to how she had changed my father's life.  He no longer calls her by the first name he gave her (Peanut) -- he now refers to her as "Sweetheart" . . . she is what keeps him ticking. (Read Peanut's story on Paws To Remember, page 3.)

Although I shed a few tears when each and every one of my fosters moves on to their forever home, I cherish the times I had with them during their brief stay in my home.  I want you to know that I still hear from their new owners, who are thrilled with their new family members.  I thoroughly encourage others to foster -- it is such a rewarding experience.

Thanks for all you do.  It has brought such great enjoyment to so many lives.

Deborah Boyle

We thank YOU, Debbie!  Folks like you who provide foster care for the rescue groups are an integral part of the rescue program.  When you open your home and your heart to a foster dog, you are, indeed, helping to save a life!
BEAGLE BABIES . . .

Velma (left), a Barbour dog, and Fred (center) from Ritchie County, WV were adopted by the Sannizzaro family who live in Granby, CT.  Pete Sannizzaro sent this update . . .

" . . . Both dogs are doing great and love their new family.  The get lots of rides in the car and tons of walks.  They are our constant companions, as they both love to be next to (or on top of us) as soon as we sit down on the couch, bed, or wherever.  We're greeted each morning with jumps and howls -- both have become really vocal and are always letting us know what's on their mind.  They've also started to play with each other a lot and have made themselves quite a racetrack through the dining room and around back into the kitchen.

The holidays were great and the dogs got gifts from us as well as other members of  my and my  wife's families.  Yes -- they ARE getting spoiled.  (There are 2 young daughters in the Sannizzaro family who love their new best friends!)

Both are very healthy and look great; Velma has lost about 2 pounds and Fred about one pound, and Velma is going in to have her teeth cleaned soon.  It's amazing that they've lost any weight given how they eat -- probably all of the walks in the woods!"

Pete Sannizzaro

What lucky little beagles!  We're hoping Pete will keep us updated!
