Since 2002 the Animal Friends volunteers have been here to care for more than 7,000 Barbour County companion animals that have needed us. Wally is now living the good life on a farm in New England. Howdy was joyfully reunited with his family in Barbour County. Helen was adopted by a loving family in Pennsylvania. Jessie is a cherished member of the Schwartz family. Curly Sue is still in foster care with us while she waits for someone to give her a 'forever' home. Barney is much loved by the Holmes family in New Hampshire. Genevieve found her 'forever' home with the Burts family in Vermont. Duke is a robust fella now and loving every minute of his new life, and Stella found a place to rest her weary bones with an Animal Friends volunteer.
. . . about Barney when his
hip was broken and he
was abandoned by
his owner.
. . . about Genevieve when
she was badly injured
and abandoned.
. . . about Duke when he was
found wandering the streets
starving and cold.
. . . about Stella, a
senior lady who was
abandoned by her family.
When no one else cared, WE did!
Just today these 9 precious pups, who were running loose, were brought in by an Animal Friends volunteer. They'll be vaccinated, wormed and socialized, and will be available for adoption soon.
Hughey is continuing his recovery with an Animal Friends volunteer after having surgery to repair his broken hind leg. He still needs one more operation, and then will be available for adoption.
Our volunteers are also caring for 9 cats and a mother dog and her pups that were abandoned on this property when their owner moved and left them behind.
And Jackson is in foster with an Animal Friends volunteer while he waits for his 'forever' home after having surgery to amputate a leg that was injured in a trap.
THE QUESTION NOW IS -- will we be able to continue to care? Over recent months the economic downturn has devastated donations, while the number of critically sick and injured pets has risen dramatically.
AND MAKING MATTERS WORSE is the lack of funds to continue with our plans to open our own facility. After seven years of hoping for a shelter of our own, we finally saw a light at the end of the tunnel when we got permission to use these two mobile homes as separate facilities for cats and puppies.
When no one else cares, WE do!
Proposed Cat Shelter
Proposed Puppy Shelter
While the buildings are sound structurally, both need extensive renovations to serve their purpose. That takes money -- money we just don't have. If we can't complete our project, we'll lose the buildings, and if we don't have funds to care for the animals, we'll have to shut down our operation entirely. That means that the County Administrators will then revert to their policy of killing every stray, abandoned, injured, neglected and abused pet that comes in to the county shelter system. PLEASE DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN!
